Running a small business in Tanzania comes with unique financial challenges. Here are five tips from our credit experts to help you manage your finances better.
1. Separate Personal and Business Finances
Always maintain separate accounts for your business and personal expenses. This makes it easier to track profits, prepare for taxes, and apply for loans.
2. Keep Simple Records
You do not need accounting software to start. A simple notebook recording daily income and expenses is enough to understand your cash flow.
3. Build a Business Emergency Fund
Set aside a small amount each month into a savings account. This buffer protects your business during slow seasons or unexpected expenses.
4. Borrow for Growth, Not Survival
Loans are most effective when invested in income-generating assets or stock. Avoid borrowing to cover operating losses without a clear plan to improve revenue.
5. Know Your Repayment Capacity Before Borrowing
Calculate your monthly surplus before applying for a loan. Your monthly repayment should not exceed 30% of your net monthly income.
